Summary

Description
English: "Vue de Honolulu. lles Sandwich". This scene depicts Honolulu at the time of the visit of French seafarer Auguste Nicholas Vaillant in 1836 with the artist Barthelemy Lauvergne aboard. This engraving shows their moored ship, La Bonite, along with a small launch and a traditional canoe. In the foreground, some Hawaiians appear in traditional dress; others wear missionary-influenced European clothing. A dog follows a Hawaiian couple. The dog has been hypothesized by anthropologist Katharine Luomala as a possible depiction of a Hawaiian poi dog.
