Description

1860-1900 carte de visite photo of two children, by W H Gill of 88 James Street, Devonport, England (later of 33 Catherine Street).

Points of interest
  • In the 19th century, people wore their best clothes, and borrowed or hired clothes for formal portraits. These children have been washed and combed and temporarily dressed up with polished shoes.
  • The socks would have been hand-knitted on fine bone needles, because steel needles stained white wool.
