Summary
DescriptionWestwood Elementary School, Montana Avenue and Harrison Avenue, Westwood, Cincinnati, OH - 51920907200.jpg |
English: Built in 1909, this Classical Revival-style red brick school building was designed by Frederick W. Garber to replace an earlier building on the same site. The building features extensive decorative terra cotta trim, a parapet with balustrades over the large window bays, a decorative surround at the front entrance and windows above, decorative metal screens at the front entrances, arched windows at the auditorium in the rear, decorative gable parapets at the side entrance bays, double-hung windows, a band of terra cotta and brick trim at the base of the parapet, and a decorative terra cotta frieze over the main entrance. The school faces a large playground in the front along Montana Avenue, the site of the previous school building it replaced, and borders a small residential street and parking lot to the rear, formerly the location of a passenger train line that ran from Cheviot to Downtown Cincinnati until the 1930s. The school was renovated in 1979-1980 to increase capacity and modernize the facilities, allowing the former Bracken Woods Primary School to be consolidated with the other grades at the campus. In 2011-2012, the school was rehabilitated to modernize the building systems and learning spaces, while preserving the building’s historic character, and adding a new wing to the east side of the building, which houses a new gymnasium, and features exterior elements that mimic the original building next door. The school is a contributing structure in the Westwood Town Center Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. |
