The four chapels at the foot of thepagoda are adorned by colossal figuresof the sitting Buddha, and in thefarthest recess, in a niche of its own,is a still more TOodlv figure, thethick gilding darkened in manyplaces by the fumes of thousands ofburning tapers and candles. Hun-dreds of Gautamas, large and small,sitting, standing, and reclining, whiteand black, of alabaster, sun-driedclay, or wood, surround and arepropped up on the larger images.High stone altars for the offering ofrice and flowers stand before thelions, interspersed with niche altarsfor burnt - offerings. On the outeredge of the platform are a host ofsmall pagodas, each with its ii;tazanngs, image - houses overflowingwith the gifts of generations ofpilgrims ; figures of Buddha in singlelow stone chapels ; tall posts (calledtaguttdamg), flaunting from whichare
