English: Chinese Secret Societies
Golden Coin Society 金錢會 Qing Dynasty (1858-1862) During the Hsienfeng Emperor period, 8 sworn brothers decided to establish a secret society recruiting the common folks to rebel and overthrow the incumbent Manchu Qing Dynasty. All members were initiated through secret rites associated with the larger Tiandihui (天地會） network sharing the same objectives to restore Han rule. Members will be issued these coins as proof of membership thus help will be assured from members when needed. After a failed uprising, the government decreed that all such coins be seized and confiscated. As a result, they are very rare. |
