My grandfather, Paul, used told us about his friends who escaped from the early fire. Even though the sawmill was paying well at the time, my grandmother would not let him work there. Hands were severed, legs were mangled, and the working conditions were generally poor.
The story of how it happened was a metal fragment passed through the processor and ignited a the dry slash on the ground. Due to its the drying wood the mill swelled quickly. It was over when the walls went into flames and all of the larger wood piles took fire. The loading dock garages were pulled up by my grandfather's friend, who suffered burns to his hands from the heat. In the back, by the furnace two men were trapped and could not find a way out. The fire was too big and they could not put it out.
