Fair use

This image has been challenged as possibly not constituting fair use and/or inadequately explaining the rationale for fair use. I believe that it clearly is fair use. The image is used solely to illustrate the Wikipedia article about the pictured publication, American Chess Quarterly. As stated in that article, that magazine ceased publication in early 1965 (over 45 years ago), so the image appears to have no current commercial value. Moreover, the image is very low-resolution; it is blurry and hard to read. The use of the image to illustrate the Wikipedia article about the pictured publication is analogous to the use of a photograph of a book to illustrate a review of that book. Newspapers and magazines very commonly use photographs in that way. Moreover, those photographs are typically much higher-resolution than this one, and the books in question were recently printed, and thus have current commercial value (unlike this long-defunct magazine). The fact that a photograph is routinely used to illustrate a book review suggests that such a use is fair use. If so, surely the present use is fair use. Krakatoa (talk) 04:14, 3 July 2010 (UTC)
