This is a lovely graphic, but sadly, it is not accurate.

The machine shown as number 2 in the progression with a date of 1830 was not created then. There were many claims that Kirkpatrick Macmillan developed a velocipede with this appearance in 1839 or earlier, but the design is actually that of Robert McCall from 1869. It's also not really a significant development in cycle history.

The machine shown as number 3 does appear representative of early Michaux-style machines. However, 1860 is too early a date. Lallement's patent for an almost identical design is dated 1866. Michaux may have begun building bicycles of similar design as early as 1863, but the evidence is scanty.

Perhaps someone with SVG editing skills could remove the number 2 example and fix the date for number 3, making this a much better illustration of bicycle development. Rupert Clayton (talk) 07:43, 31 March 2010 (UTC)
