Southern Europe[edit]

Cyprus and Rhodes are geographically in Western Asia, if this is not corrected I will request deletion due to inaccuracy. Izzedine (talk) 06:19, 30 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

1. Cyprus in considered European for cultural and historic reasons, despite being geographically in Asia.
2. Rhodes is part of Greece, which is a country geographically situated in Southeastern Europe but also considered sometimes Western European.

1. Culture does not override geography in geographical matters. North, South, East and West are Geographic references.
2. Rhodes is within swimming distance of Anatolia and is way off Europe.
Please correct the picture. Izzedine (talk) 10:56, 30 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I need a good reason before "correcting" the picture and besides you had nothing to say regarding my reply.

Give your monitor a clean and take another look. Izzedine (talk) 11:22, 30 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Rhodes is Greek and European no matter how close it might be to Anatolia.
Show me a source that say that Rhodes is Asian. I suppose that you're going to say next that you consider that all of Greece should belong to Turkey!
Not only geography but also culture, climate, language etc do influence the definition of European regions.

We are not singing from the same hymnsheet here. Maps depicting Geographic regions use Geography as their criteria. Incorrect maps will be submitted for deletion. Izzedine (talk) 11:42, 30 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
This map is not based on Geography alone. If it were so, then you would probably color it red south of a certain latitude which is a very strict and narrow thing to consider.
Southern Europe is defined not solely by geography, as I already said, but also: climate, culture, language, habits and other factors.

The map is both correct and incorrect. In actual fact Rhodes, Chios, etc. are Asian islands (Asia Minor). Asia Minor was once Greek lands and Greece once straddled both Europe and Asia Minor. The islands are Greek in culture, not "European." Greece is the real Europe (Italy too). This argument is pointless. Technically they are Asian islands (Greece's Asian islands). Look at the continental shelf. --Nikoz78 (talk) 08:04, 13 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
