...Afin de rétablir la véritable signification du mot pendentif, nous présentons dans la figure 2 une sorte d'analyse du système de construction auquel seul on doit l'appliquer. Soit une demi-sphère dont la projection horizontale est la ligne ponctuée ABCD. Si, sur chaque face du carré ABCD inscrit par cette sphère, nous élevons des plans verticaux, nous formons quatre sections ABi>a, BCb, CDc, DAd, dans la demi-sphère, qui donnent les demi-cercles. Supposons que, sous ces quatre demi-cercles, nous bandions quatre arcs, nous reportons le poids de la calotte supérieure de cette sphère et des quatre triangles sur les quatre points ABCD. Ceci fait, admettons qu'au-dessus de la clef de ces quatre arcs, nous fassions une section horizontale dans la demi-sphère, nous obtenons un cercle parfait abcd...

In order to establish the correct significance of the word "pendentive", in figure 2 we show a sort of analysis of the only system of construction to which one can properly apply it. Take a hemi-sphere of which the horizontal projection is the dotted line ABCD. If, from each side of the square ABCD inscribed in this sphere we raise vertical planes, we obtain four sections of the hemi-sphere ABa, BCb, CDc DAd, which are semicircles. If we make four arches under these semicircles, we will transfer the weight of the structure above onto the four points ABCD. Having done that, a horizontal section of the hemisphere through the summit of the four arches will give a perfect circle abcd...
