It looks like 8086 CPU have 16 bit (maybe 20 bit) address bus and 8 bit (or maybe can be 4 bit too) data bus. Thus only 8 bits of data can be saved or read to/from RAM per RAM clock cycle (Pentium etc can write or read 64 bits to or from RAM per RAM clock cycle).
