It was founded in 1984; its mission is the promotion of all areas of Greek studies. Together with the Danish, Norwegian and Swedish institutes, it contributes to the Nordic Library at Athens.

The Finnish Institute has been actively engaged in archaeological fieldwork since 1999. Past and present projects include excavations at Arethousa (Greek Macedonia), and at Stratos (Akarnania), as well as a survey in the Kokytos basin (Thesprotia).
