State Road 514 (SR 514), also known as Malabar Road, is a 11.7 miles (18.8 km) long east–west highway that serves Palm Bay and Malabar, Florida. It is the only east–west Brevard County major road to be in both the 27th and 28th degrees latitude,[clarification needed] and the dividing line between north and south Palm Bay.

Route description

Between the town limits of Malabar and U.S. Route 1, the speed limit is 55 with two lanes. Both the city halls of Palm Bay and Malabar are located on this road. Through the city of Palm Bay, Florida, the road opens to four-to-six lanes. SR 514 ends at the interchange with Interstate 95, where the road continues as County Road 514.

At the western end of Palm Bay, the road is again two lanes wide, with a speed limit of 45 because the area is largely residential. West of Palm Bay Regional Park, at Heritage High School, the road becomes a dirt road and passes the Indian Fields. For a half mile, the roads remains unpaved. It then turns to a north–south road as it enters Three Forks Marsh Conservation Area and is again paved for one mile (1.6 km). The true western terminus of Malabar Road is within the Three Forks Marsh Conservation Area.[2]

Future

There is a proposed causeway over the Indian River Lagoon east of U.S. Route 1, that would extend the state road for two miles (3 km). If it was built, it would be 12 miles (19 km) long. Because of a condominium community on the barrier island, it would steer away from it and head directly east–west to State Road A1A. In February 2017, the town of Malabar, Florida sent a packet[3] of information to Florida's governor Rick Scott about the numerous problems plaguing the eastern portion of the road. This included recommendations to expand the current two lanes to four in order to align with the portion of road in Palm Bay, Florida as well as adding various traffic control features at several dangerous intersections, installing an additional turning lane for Palm Bay Community Hospital and adding a caution light at the Malabar Fire Department.

Major intersections

The entire route is in Brevard County.
