Frank Buchser (1828–1890) was a Swiss painter.[1]
Life and work
Buchser was born on 15 August, 1828 near Solothurn in Switzerland. At the age of 18 years he was apprenticed to a piano builder. However, his apprenticeship ended abruptly when the master found him in bed with his daughter. After that, he travelled to Paris where he studied art.
After a career in Europe and Africa, Buscher visited the United States in 1866 and remained there until 1870. He painted scenes of the American plains, capturing colour like none before him. He caught up with the Sherman military party and painted scenes of military sites, including Fort Laramie. [2] In the US, he painted portraits of many notable characters including: President Andrew Johnson, Secretary of State, William Seward and William Tecumseh Sherman. [3]
His works focussed on portraits, landscapes and Orientalist themes. His work is noted for its use of colour and light.
He died on November 22, 1890 in the country of his birth.
