Freddy Auratus is the main character of the Golden Hamster Saga, written by Dietlof Reiche and translated from the German by John Brownjohn. He is a hamster that feels that he serves a greater purpose in life than just sitting in a pet shop all day. So, he learns to read and write and goes through many adventures from opening his cage, to escaping to the past. He is a very intelligent hamster. In Freddy's Final Quest, he goes to live in 12th-century Syria, reaching his promised land. This part of the series received generally critical reception, as to live in Assyria he must leave Mr. John, Sophie, and his other friends.
