Gernot Erler (born 3 May 1944 in Meißen) is a German politician (SPD) who was member of the Bundestag, the German parliament, from 1987 to 2017. He was State Minister at the German Foreign Ministry from 2005 to 2009. Since 2014 he has been Representative for Russian Affairs (Russland-Beauftragter) of the German federal government (official title: Koordinator für die zwischengesellschaftliche Zusammenarbeit mit Russland, Zentralasien und den Ländern der Östlichen Partnerschaft, Coordinator for Inter-Societal Cooperation with Russia, Central Asia and the Eastern Partnership Countries). Erler studied history, Slavic studies and political science in Berlin and Freiburg from 1963 to 1967.[1]
