===Founders===

SPaM was established in 1989 by Corey Billington (currently a Professor at [[International_Institute_for_Management_Development|IMD]]) who had recently joined HP and was working with Sarah Beckman (currently a Professor at [[UC Berkeley]]). Legend has it that Corey asked Lew Platt for $100K to start a team focused on efficiency and inventory within HP. Soon after, Corey added Tom Davis, Rob Hall, Ed Feitzinger, and Steve Rockhold to the team and began a fruitful collaboration with Hau Lee (then a young Professor at [[Stanford]] and currently the Thoma Professor of Operations, Information, and Technology at [[Stanford gsb|Stanford Graduate School of Business]]).

The SPaM name was decided on before the internet era – the source of the name is shrouded in mystery.

The blue (bell-shaped) in the SPaM logo represents a [[normal distribution]] and is meant to lead the audience to think about [[uncertainty]] – specifically the measurement of uncertainty and that with measurement comes the ability to manage. The triangles represent [[inventory]] – the largest asset on the books of most [[consumer electronics]] manufacturers and certainly the largest asset at HP. The combination of the shapes are meant to represent using analytics to enable decision making under uncertainty to improve asset management performance.
