Hadji Bey
Hadji Bey is a Turkish delight confectionery made in County Kildare, Ireland.[1][2]
History
The original product was created by Harutun Batmazian, an Armenian trader, who exhibited at the 1902 Great Cork International Exhibition. He moved to Cork City where the business thrived.[3] The business exported it confections to Harrods inLondon and Bloomingdale’s in New York. It was even supplied to Buckingham Palace.[4]
His shop facade on McCurtin Street read: Hadji Bey et Cie which gave the premises an exotic, international, quasi-French atmosphere.[5]
The business today
In the 1970s the business was sold and the product is now made by UHC Confectionery in Newbridge, while keeping a premises at the English Market in Cork.
