Hamza Bencherif (born 2 February 1988) is an Algerian professional footballer who plays for Wrexham at centre back or as a midfielder. Born in Paris, he has played in the Football League for several clubs and represented Algeria at youth international level.
Club career
Bencherif started his career with Nottingham Forest, but never made a first-team appearance. He was loaned out to Lincoln City in October 2007, where he made 12 appearances in Football League Two and scored one goal against Chesterfield.[2] He was released by Forest at the end of the 2008–09 season and signed a one-year contract with Macclesfield Town.[3] He became a first-team regular in the first half of the season at Moss Rose, but a broken ankle he sustained in December ended his season.[4][5] Bencherif signed a one-year extension to his contract in May 2010,[4] and scored 31 goals in 41 league games during the 2010–11 campaign.[6]
He rejected a new contract offer from Macclesfield in June 2011 to sign a two-year deal with Notts County.[7] He made 31 league appearances for the club over two seasons and scored twice before being released when his contract expired in the summer of 2013.[6][8] Bencherif signed a short-term deal with Plymouth Argyle in September,[9] and scored on his debut the next day against Cheltenham Town.[10] He was released in January 2014, having made nine appearances for the club in all competitions,[11] and moved to JS Kabylie on an 18-month contract.[12]
On 1 August 2014, Bencherif joined Conference Premier side Lincoln City on a one-year contract.[13] After one season with Lincoln he joined FC Halifax Town on a 1 year deal.
International career
Bencherif made seven appearances for the Algeria under-20 team.[14] A call-up to the senior side was talked about in 2009 due to his form at Macclesfield Town before a broken ankle ended his season.[15]
