Havidán Rodríguez (born February 24, 1959, in Arecibo, Puerto Rico) earned his Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and has had a distinguished career in educational leadership, teaching, research, and community service.
Current profile and recent achievements
Dr. Havidán Rodríguez was named the 20th President of the University at Albany, SUNY by the SUNY Board of Trustees on June 21, 2017,[1] starting in mid-September 2017. He is the first Hispanic/Latino President of any of the SUNY four-year campuses.[2] Prior to this position, Rodríguez served as founding Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV), and Professor of Sociology; President ad Interim of The University of Texas–Pan American (UTPA), the institution's final leader; Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at UTPA; Deputy Provost at University of Delaware, where he also was a Professor in the Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice; and former Director at the Disaster Research Center, the oldest and one of the leading social science disaster research centers in the world.
Rodríguez's honors and awards include being recognized as a 2017 Top Latino Leader by the National Diversity Council;[3] the UTRGV President's Medallion in 2017; the 2017 Inspiring Leaders in STEM Award by INSIGHT into Diversity magazine;[4] the 2016 Cesar Estrada Chavez Award by the American Association for Access, Equity and Diversity;[5][6] the 2015 Alfredo G. de los Santos, Jr. Distinguished Leadership Award by the American Association for Hispanics in Higher Education;[7][8] being the featured cover story of the June 2015 issue of The Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education;[9] and being highlighted in the September 2015 Bright Spots in Hispanic Education on-line catalogue,[10][11] by the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics; among others (including those listed below).
One of Rodríguez's major faculty-related programmatic achievements at UTRGV/UTPA was as Principal Investigator on the ADVANCE Program on Attracting and Nurturing Women at a Hispanic-Serving Institution,[12] funded by the National Science Foundation through an ADVANCE Institutional Transformation grant.[13] The lead Co-PI and Project Director on the UTRGV ADVANCE Program is Ala Qubbaj, Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs & Diversity.[14] This Program has a series of integrated components and initiatives related to faculty recruitment, retention, and advancement, including the ADVANCE Leadership Institute,[15] the ADVANCE Administrative Fellows Program, and the ADVANCE Associate to Full Professor Program.[16] Under the Education & Empowerment Component of ADVANCE, the UTRGV/UTPA Women's Faculty Network was launched,[17] which inspired a similar network at The University of Texas Arlington.[18] His staunch support of undergraduate research and experiential learning opportunities was one of the reasons he was highlighted in the Bright Spots in Hispanic Education listed in the "Honors and awards" section below.
Research and scholarship
Havidán Rodríguez has a significant number of publications in two major – and often overlapping – research areas: (1) social science aspects of disasters (including the vulnerability and resiliency to disasters), and (2) socioeconomic well-being among minorities, particularly Latinos/as, in the U.S. (including the migration, education, and socioeconomic mobility among Puerto Ricans in Puerto Rico and the U.S. mainland). He has led and participated in a number of field research projects, including trips to Honduras, following Hurricane Mitch; India and Sri Lanka, following the Indian Ocean Tsunami; and the Gulf Coast, following Hurricane Katrina. He has received funding from a variety of agencies, including NSF, the Ford Foundation, NIMH, FEMA, and others.
In addition to numerous journal articles and book chapters, Rodríguez is co-author (with Marie Mora and Alberto Dávila) of Population, Migration, and Socioeconomic Outcomes among Island and Mainland Puerto Ricans: La Crisis Boricua (Lexington Books, under production Summer 2017). He is also the co-editor of Handbook of Disaster Research (with Quarantelli and Dynes, Springer, 2006);[19] Handbook of Disaster Research, 2nd Edition (with Trainor and Donner, Springer, forthcoming, expected late 2017); and Latinas/os in the United States: Changing the Face of América (with Rogelio Sáenz and Menjívar, Springer, 2008)[20].
Education
Havidán Rodríguez earned his Bachelor's degree in Psychology from the University of Maryland, his Master's degree in Sociology from the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee, and his Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. His Ph.D. field of specialization was Demography - an area in which he continues to publish.
