Henry Brown was an African-American inventor, perhaps best known as the inventor of a type of strongbox.

Strongboxes had been around since at least 1835, when English inventors Charles Chubb and Jeremiah Chubb received a patent for a burglar-resisting safe. Henry Brown developed a type of lockable, forged-metal container, divided into compartments, and patented his invention (number 352,036) on November 2, 1886.[1]
