Herbert List (October 7, 1903April 4, 1975) was a German photographer who worked for magazines like Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, and Life.

His austere, classically-posed black-and-white compositions, particularly of male nudes, taken in Italy and Greece have been highly formative for modern photography, with contemporary fashion photographers like Herb Ritts being clearly influenced by List's style. He is also noted for his erotic street photography.

The other side of List's work was begun in 1933, and matured in 1936 once he had fled Nazi Germany and reached the safety (he was gay) of London. This side aimed to produce what he called the "fotografia metafisica", picturing dream states and fantastic imagery using mirrors and double-exposures.

In 1941 however List returned to Germany and settled in Munich. From 1944 to 1945 he was in Norway as a German soldier, returning to Munich at the end of the war.
