Indian Ocean University; known as IOU: (Jaamacadda Bedweynta Hindiya) is oldest Private, nonprofit provider of accredited education University in Somalia, located in the city of Mogadishu, it was established in 1993.
History
1991 Civil war in Somalia caused collapse of all of the institutions including the only government run National University in Somalia. Without a functional central government in Somalia, and its capacity to provide key public goods and services to its citizens, Somali intellectual group get together May 3, 1993 and decided that it’s their duty to help next generation and established Indian Ocean University; known as IOU and dedicated campus on airport road in KM4 square situated about 1 kilometers (0.6 miles) from Aden Adde International Airport in order to fill the higher education vacuum left by collapse of Somalia.
First batch of students started on September 1993 on limited academic discipline at Indian Ocean University (IOU), like Business Administration and Nursing.
Samawade Ali-Dahir is the president.[1]
Admission
Admission to the university is based on examination. Each applicant must have earned one of the following educational credentials: a high school diploma or equivalent, or a post-secondary degree. The diploma or other acceptable documentation of the applicant's educational achievement must be provided for the student's file by the end of registration unless the school grants an extension.
The primary language of instruction at the Indian Ocean University is English. To enable academic success, students are required to satisfy English Language Proficiency.
Indian Ocean University in fulfilling its mission, the University does not discriminate on the basis of age, religion, race, color, national and ethnic origin, or handicap in the administration of its educational policies, scholarship, admissions policies, and other University administered programs and employment.

Undergraduate research
Indian Ocean University (IOU) has program that provide option for students to engage in research with faculty mentor. Students acquire first hand experience in an academic field of research while developing skills such as effective communication, information processing and critical thinking.
