History
The Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka (IESL) established in 1906 is the apex body in Engineering in Sri Lanka and has been incorporated by the Act 17 of 1968 of Parliament. It is one of the oldest professional institutions in South Asia and has nearly 10000 members on its roll as at present. Its membership falls broadly in to two categories viz., Corporate Members and Non Corporate Members. Corporate Members are also commonly identified as Chartered Engineers. The Corporate Membership of the Institution is awarded through a stringent Professional Review Process to those who are academically qualified in engineering. The aspirants for Corporate Membership need to fulfil certain requirements with regard to their training and the practical experience they have acquired after graduation. The majority of Non Corporate Members are graduate engineers who although they have obtained the necessary academic qualifications to become Chartered Engineers are yet to complete the necessary training and other requirements.
About Membership
The Corporate Members who have obtained four year full-time engineering degrees from recognized universities after a few years of service as Chartered Engineers qualify to obtain Professional Engineer status from the Institution, a qualification now recognized world over because of the internationally accepted procedures followed by the Institution in assessing the applicants as laid out by the Engineers’ Mobility Forum (EMF) of which the IESL is a full member.
The IESL also has the Provisional Membership of Washington Accord (WA) another international agreement among bodies responsible for accrediting engineering degree programs in their respective countries.
The Institution also conducts a degree equivalent engineering course, the entry requirements of which are same as those required by the engineering faculties of local universities. This course is much sought after by those students who have successfully completed the Advanced Level Examination in the Mathematics stream but who do not get admission to the Universities because of the limited number of places available therein. Those who have obtained engineering diplomas could also follow this course. University academics and senior engineers from the industry serve as the lecturers. Those who successfully complete this part-time course are eligible for the Associate Membership of the Institution and could one day become Corporate Members of the Institution after undergoing the Professional Review Process.
