Isak Andic Ermay (Turkish: İsak Andiç; October 1953 – 14 December 2024) was a Turkish-born Spanish billionaire businessman, the founder and largest shareholder in the clothing retail chain Mango.
As of December 2024, Forbes estimated his net worth at US$4.5 billion.[1]
Early life and career
Born to a Sephardic Jewish family in Istanbul, Turkey, in October 1953,[2][3][4][5] Andic's family emigrated from Turkey to Barcelona, Spain in 1969[2] where he and his brother Nahman began selling hand-embroidered "made-in-Turkey" T-shirts[3] and clogs.[2] They opened shops in Barcelona and Madrid, first selling their own brand (Isak Jeans) and then stocking other brands.[3] In 1984, he joined with fellow entrepreneur Enric Cusí and his brother and re-denominated all their stores under the name Mango.[2][3] Andic chose the name "Mango" after tasting the fruit on a trip to the Philippines.[2]
In 2006, Andic was appointed a director of Banco Sabadell[2] and in 2012, became its single largest shareholder with a 7% ownership interest.[6]
According to Forbes, Andic's net worth as of November 2023 was €2.7 billion, making him the richest person in Catalonia.[7] In 2010, he was the 32nd richest Jew in the world.[8] Although Mango's biggest market is Spain, Turkey has the largest number of Mango stores[9] with 70 in total as of 2022.[10]
Personal life and death
Andic was divorced from Neus Raig Tarragó with whom he had three children:[2][11] Jonathan Andic (born 1981) who was named his successor in 2012;[2][3][11] Judith Andic (born 1984), who also works for Mango; and Sarah Andic (born 1997).[2][11] Also, he had a relationship with the Catalan stylist Zenaida Bufill Comadrán.[12] Andic lived in Barcelona.[1]
Andic was a member of IESE's International Advisory Board (IAB).[13]
Andic died in Collbató, on 14 December 2024, at the age of 71, after falling to his death during a visit to the Salnitre Caves .[14][15]
