Itasca is a word coined by Henry Schoolcraft as a name for Lake Itasca, the source of the Mississippi River. Schoolcraft coined the name from a combination of the Latin words veritas ("truth") and caput ("head").[1][2] The following places and ships have been named after the Mississippi Headwaters:

  • USCGC Itasca (1929), a United States Coast Guard cutter in commission from 1930 to 1941 and from 1946 to 1950, famous for her role during the disappearance of Amelia Earhart in 1937
  • USS Itasca, the name of more than one United States Navy ship
  • USS Itasca II (SP-803), a United States Navy patrol vessel in commission from 1918 to 1919
