J. H. Wallis (1885-1958) was a writer whose best-selling book Once Off Guard (in later publications it was called The Woman in the Window) was made into a film, The Woman in the Window (1944), directed by Fritz Lang.

Published a book of poetry (1916, New Haven: Yale University Press) "The Testament of William Windune and Other Poems." Title poem was modeled after "The Greater Testament of Francois Villon."
