John "Jack" Phillips was a Welsh professional football forward who played in the Football League, most notably for Bristol Rovers and Merthyr Town.[1] He finished his league career having scored 107 goals in 174 games.[1]

Career

Early years

Phillips began his Football League career with West Bromwich Albion, Rochdale and Southend United.[1][2]

Merthyr Town

Phillips returned to Wales to sign for Division Three South side Merthyr Town in 1925.[1] His 31 goals in 57 appearances during his two seasons with the club failed to inspire the Martyrs to top-half finishes.[1][3]

Brentford

Phillips signed for Division Three South club Brentford in 1927.[1] Despite missing 19 league games, Phillips was in prolific form, scoring 18 goals in 23 matches during the 1927/28 season.[4] He began the 1928/29 season in similar form, scoring four goals in his six four games,[4] before being sold in September 1928.[1] Phillips scored 22 goals in his 29 appearances for the Bees.[1]

Later career

Phillips scored prolifically in spells with Bristol Rovers and Coventry City,[1] before seeing his career out back in Wales with Merthyr Town, Barry and Troedyrhiw.[5]
