James Somervell (1845–1924) was Conservative MP for Ayr Burghs (UK Parliament constituency). He won a by-election in 1890, but he lost his seat to William Birkmyre, the Liberal candidate, in 1892.

In 1904 he stood trial on a charge of assaulting a man by firing a gun in his direction, but he pleaded that the gun had been discharged by accident, and the jury acquitted him.
