Joan Bybee

Joan Lea Bybee (Hooper; born 11 February 1945 New Orleans, LA) is an American linguist. She is a Distinguished Professor at the University of New Mexico. She served as president of the Linguistic Society of America in 2004. Much of her work concerns grammaticalisation, stochastics, modality, phonology and morphology. She was married (Austin, Texas on 19 June 1965) to William Thomas Hooper III (born 31 August 1944).

Bybee has a bachelor's degree from the University of Texas at Austin, a master's degree from San Diego State University and a Ph.D. from the University of California at Los Angeles.
