His dissertation committee was chaired by Elizabeth Kubler-Ross.

Career

He Joined the army in 1956 and retired in 1988 after serving among other things with research and development, special ops, and as green berets commander, Special Forces in Vietnam, led Cambodian mercenaries behind enemy lines, and took part in a number of clandestine programmes, including Phoenix.

During his time in the army he showed interest in esoteric techniques similar to those explored by Lt. Col. Jim Channon in his First Earth Battalion manual. For example neuro-linguistic programming with which he hoped to create "Jedi warriors". (according to himself in his 1990 book The Warrior's Edge).

For five years, he was a deputy sheriff in Dade County, Florida.

After his retirement Dr. Alexander joined Los Alamos National Laboratory where he developed the concept of Non-Lethal Defense. He conducted briefings on non-lethal warfare at the highest levels of government, participated in a Council on Foreign Relations study of non-lethal weapons and chaired the first major conference on the topic.
Currently he is a member of the (Canadian) National Research Council Committee for Assessment of Non-Lethal Weapons Science and Technology. His latest book is Future War: Non-Lethal Weapons in Twenty-First-Century Warfare
Col. Alexander figures prominently in journalist Jon Ronson's book The Men Who Stare At Goats which examines the subject of New Age ideas influencing the military.

Interview with coasttocoastam.com Tuesday November 12th, 2002

John B. Alexander, Retired US Army Colonel and “non-lethal” weapons expert, describes the reality of conflicts that are already beginning to take place, both in foreign lands and in our cities. Col. Alexander will also give a broad look at the various types of weapons that are likely to be used more and more by military and civilian forces, including

  • electromagnetic weapons,
  • chemical options,
  • various forms of restraint,
  • low-impact weapons,
  • acoustical weapons,
  • information warfare, and
  • nonlethal biological weapons.

Interview with Washington Post

In the Wahsington Post, Sunday, January 14, 2007; W22, By Sharon Weinberger, Mind Games,

New on the Internet: a community of people who believe the government is beaming voices into their minds. They may be crazy, but the Pentagon has pursued a weapon that can do just that.
Alexander acknowledged that
"there were some abuses that took place,"
but added that, on the whole,
"I would argue we threw the baby out with the bath water."

By saying this, Alexander and his group of people admitted that they had done, whatever it is, to the INNOCENT people.

Here are questions.

  • What is it that, he and his group of people have been doing, especially under whose authority?
  • If and only if he and his group of people have done the illegal activity, harming the innocent civilians including foreign-born, then could these people be brought into the JUSTICE?
