John Stevenson was a Scottish footballer who played in The Football League for Accrington.[1] His brother George Stevenson was also a footballer and his father played for Sunderland F.C.. John Stevenson was one of two Accrington players, the other was John Horne, who played every match of the inaugural Football League season and John Stevenson played in both FA Cup matches that season. His League debut was on 8 September 1888, at Anfield, then home of Everton. Accrington lost the match 2–1. John Stevenson played in all 22 League matches played by Accrington in season 1888–89. Stevenson played full-back in a defence-line that kept two clean-sheets and kept the opposition to one-League-goal-in-a-match on five separate occasions. Accrington finished 7th in the League on Goal Average above Everton. On 20 October 1888 John Stevenson, playing as a full–back was part of a defence that prevented The Invincibles Preston North End from scoring. Preston North End played 27 League and FA Cup matches in Season 1888-89 and their visit to Accrington was the only time they failed to score a goal. John Stevenson played 5 seasons for Accrington retiring at the end of the 1892-1893 season.[2]
