Kali Muscle is a bodybuilder originally from Oakland, California. He is also an actor and has appeared in commercials for Taco Bell, Geico, Snickers, Comcast, Honda and others. He is a motivator who draws on his own life experience and time spent in prison to deter people from taking the wrong path.
Background
Kali was born Chuck Kirkendall on February 18, 1975.[1][2] One of three children, he was brought up by his mother and step-father. He came from a poor neighborhood. When he was still young one of his brothers died of an accidental self-shooting.[3] Prior to his brother’s death, he did well at sports, including track and wrestling. He had received a football scholarship to Fresno State University. He was also training at the gym. The death of his brother started a downward slide in his life and into criminal activity.[4] He said that bodybuilding saved him from gang life. He managed to turn his life around from the past he had.[5][6] He now is on a mission of sorts to talk to young people about his time in prison and the lesson he has learnt about violence and crime.[7] He has become well known for his online videos as well.[8] His biography From Xcon to Icon was released around 2013.[9]
Earlier years
Not long after the death of his brother, Kali ended up in jail for committing an armed robbery, and spent seven years in San Quentin prison. He would train daily to build himself up more. One day the prison guards came and took away the weights. Later as a result of weights being confiscated, he taught himself how to work out in his cell without weights.[10][11]
Career
He is probably recognizable to television watchers as the bodybuilder in the Geico ad who was directing the traffic. He also made an appearance in the music video for country singer Jamey Johnson.[12]
He runs a motivational YouTube channel which is about fitness and he talks about how to workout and train with limited equipment.[13]
One of his early acting roles was in the 2011 film Wonder Woman.[14] The following year he appeared in the film Applebaum.[15] Another film released that year was The Dog Who Saved the Holidays , a film about a crime busting Labrador called Zeus. The film starred Shelley Long, Gary Valentine and Dean Cain. He played the part of Mikey.[16] In 2014 he appeared in the episode Road to Natesville , from the TV series, Raising Hope, playing the part of Brett.[17] He played the part of bones in the Demetrius Navarro, Valente Rodriguez production, The Big Shot, a film about two small time film producers who have to make a successful movie as they are under pressure from their exec producer. They come up with an idea to kill one of their lead actors. [18][19]
