Kaspar von Silenen was the first commander or commandant of the Swiss Guards. He led the first contingent of 150 Swiss mercenaries who marched from September 1505 and entered the Vatican on January 22, 1506 (considered the foundation date of the Pontifical Swiss Guards) during the pontificate of Pope Julius II.
