On April 15, 2023, 20-year-old Kaylin Gillis was shot and killed in Hebron, New York after the car in which she was traveling turned onto the wrong driveway. The alleged shooter, Kevin D. Monahan, was arrested after a standoff and taken into custody, where he was charged with second-degree murder.[1] The shooting came two days after the shooting of Ralph Yarl in Kansas City, Missouri.[2]

Incident

Kaylin Gillis was killed on April 15, 2023, just before 10 p.m., in Washington County, an upstate New York county that borders Vermont.[3] Gillis and her friends were looking for a friend's house. Their vehicle was being driven by her boyfriend. Their car and another vehicle mistakenly pulled into the driveway of Kevin D. Monahan, who lived on a ridgetop plot in the rural town of Hebron, on Patterson Hill Road.[3][4]

After turning into the wrong driveway, the group realized they had the wrong address, and began to back the vehicle out of the driveway to leave. Gillis was one of four people in the last car to pull away.[3] As the group was leaving, Monahan exited his home and fired two shots at the vehicle[3][5] using a 20-gauge shotgun.[6] Unable to get cellphone reception in Hebron, the group drove towards the neighboring town of Salem, New York, where they were able to reach 9-1-1.[7]

After police arrived at Monahan's home, there was an hour-long standoff, in which Monahan initially refused to surrender to police officers and state troopers; he was on the phone with a police dispatcher and with his attorney for part of the standoff.[6]

Victim

Gillis grew up in Schuylerville, New York and graduated from Schuylerville High School in 2021.[3][8]

Accused

Monahan, age 65, was charged with second-degree murder.[9][10]

Monahan had lived in his home for about 20 years at the time of the shooting.[6] Longtime neighbors described him as frequently hostile, sour, and sometimes confrontational.[6][3] He had no criminal record in New York state.[6] He was arrested and charged in Vermont with aggravated assault with a weapon in 2001, but that charge was dismissed.[6]

After his arrest, Monahan was briefly taken to the Washington County Correctional Facility in Fort Edward (where Gillis's father is a correctional officer).[6][11] Monahan was then taken 45 miles (72 km) away to Warren County, where he is being held at the Warren County Jail in Lake George.[4]

He was arraigned in Washington County Court on April 16 and pleaded not guilty.[4] At a detention hearing the next day, Monahan was denied bail.[6][11] During the hearing, the prosecuting attorney said that Monahan's reputation as "confrontational and hot-tempered"—in addition to the seriousness of the crime—weighed in favor of pretrial detention.[6]
