Kilmichael (Irish: Cill Mhíchil) is a village and Civil Parish in barony of West Muskerry, County Cork, Ireland. Kilmichael P.O. is located on an early map (1897-1913) at the Cooldorragha Cross Roads.[1]

Kilmichael does not have a village however there are many villages containing populated areas.Notable GAA players include Garoid O Brian and Arnold Costello.

Kilmichael Ambush

Near the village was the scene of the famous Kilmichael Ambush. The actual fight took place at the confines of Haremount and Shanacashel at the place that was known as Dereen-a-Bharraigh, Dorin-a-Bharraigh. The little oak wood of Barry, or Barry’s oak wood.[2] The Kilmichael Ambush Site Monument is located 3.23 km (2 mi) south of the village.[3]

Schools

Dromleigh National School is the oldest national school in Ireland. The school was opened in 1840 and still survives today in its original building.[4]
