Kiltimagh railway station is a disused railway station close to the town of Kiltimagh in County Mayo. Originally the station was opened in 1895 as part of the route between Claremorris and Sligo. It was closed to passenger traffic in 1963, with goods traffic ending in 1975.[1] Following its closure, the station and surrounding area was converted in the 1980s into the Kiltimagh Museum, with displays and artefacts of local history and culture.[2]

The Western Railway Corridor was partly being rebuilt as part of a government plan Transport 21. The plan expected the line to re-open in a number of stages, with the first stage covering the route between Limerick and Athenry. The first phase failed to deliver on passenger numbers and successive governments have said that they will not invest further funds in building a line north of Athenry. The route does not qualify for EU funding and a railway would have to be funded and subsidised solely from the public purse. The most likely use of the route through Kiltimagh for the foreseeable future is as a greenway to form the basis of a tourism industry. The Sligo section of the line is being developed as a cycle and walking trail to connect Charlestown to Collooney and onwards to Enniskillen, and a majority of residents in Kiltimagh now want this greenway extended to Kiltimagh, to run parallel with the proposed velorail project.

A Velo-rail (railbike) scheme is being proposed for Kiltimagh, and was due to start in the Summer of 2016, but apart from replacing some track and rotten sleepers not much has happened as of early 2018. [3][needs update]
