Kirkegata (Norwegian for "Church Street"), is the main street of the town of Levanger, located in Nord-Trøndelag county, in the middle of Norway. The street is laid out in an axis from Mo gård, Levanger Videregående (Norwegian for Levanger High School) and the old høgskole (Høgskolen i Levanger, meaning Levanger College, is a department of Høgskolen i Trøndelag, HiNT) building, now part of Levanger videregående, past the church (hence the name Kirkegata) and down to the Levanger Bridge, the lower harbour area and the Levanger old slaughter house. The street is parted on the middle by øverparken with the famous fountain(meaning the "upper park") and the town square, refered to as Torget (not to be confused with another place in Norway) by locals. The current/"modern" street plot of Levanger was laid out by the Swedish king Carl the 3rd in the early 19th century.

Wooden houses
Most of the buildings facing Kirkegata are old wooden houses of a very fine and distinct character, constructed towards the end of the 19th century, following the last of the great town fires of Levanger (in 1848, 1863 and 1897). The last fire promted new and better fire protection measures, such as a firewall between each house. The general high amount of fine wooden houses in Levanger, has earned Levanger the status as national wooden house town in Norway. Unfortunately, some fine wooden houses were demolished and replaced by modern buildings in the 50's, 60's and 70's. Some even later. This has sparked much debate.

Other distinctive buildings
Not all of the old houses lining Kirkegata are old wooden houses. The old Levanger sparebank building (Levanger savings bank)is constructed from brick, and is a very fine and distinctive building, perhaps the finest in Levanger. The only proper hotel in downtown Levanger, Backlund Norlandia hotel, is to be found in Kirkegata 41. They can offer high quality accomedations. The modern Backlund is a multistory brick building erected after the old one was razed in a fire. The old Backlund hotel was famous for having housed the Swedish king Oscar the 2nd. The new one housed the Norwegian king Olav the 5th in the 60's. A modern spa hotel, Levanger Fjordhotell og Spa, is to be constructed down at the harbour area, a part of a gentrification process, including the transformation of the old Trønder Mat factory (meaning "Trønder food", a meat processing plant, producing sausages, etc...) into high class appartments.

Cafes and bars
Numerous cafes, pubs and bars can be found along Kirkegata. No39 is a very nice cafe in the ground floor of Backlund hotel, they can offer a very nice outdoor area during the summers. Oscar's Irish Pub is a very nice and decent Irish themed pub, offering a vast array of beer, whisky and whiskey. They can also offer a very nice outdoor area during summer.
