Liberty or death
Appearance
Liberty or death, alternatively independence or death, is a slogan made famous during the independence struggle of several countries, notably the United States of America, Brazil, Bulgaria, Catalonia, Greece, Romania, Serbia, Turkey, Ireland, and Uruguay. Those include:
- Viurem Lliures o Morirem! ("Let's live free or die!"), motto of the Catalan Resistance against the armies of Spain and France during the Siege of Barcelona in 1714.
- "Give me Liberty, or give me Death!", a famous quotation attributed to Patrick Henry near the start of the American Revolution.
- Independência ou morte ("independence or death"), motto of the Empire of Brazil (1822–89), proclaimed in 1822 for the independence.
- Eleftheria i thanatos ("freedom or death"), the national motto of Greece, derived from the 1821 Greek War of Independence.
- "Libertad o Muerte" ("Liberty or Death"), the national motto of Uruguay, taken from the Cisplatine War in 1825.
- Свобода или смърт or Svoboda ili smârt ("freedom or death"), originally spelled in older Bulgarian orthography: Свобода или смърть, is a slogan used by the Bulgarian komitadjis during and after the April Uprising of 1876, including the Ilinden-Preobrazhenie Uprising in 1903.
- Ya istiklal ya ölüm ("independence or death"), the national motto of Turkey, settled by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk and used during the Turkish War of Independence (1919-1922).
- Sloboda ili smrt or Слобода или смрт ("freedom or death"), motto of the Serbian Chetniks.
- Viața-n libertate ori moarte ("Life in freedom or death!"), a shout proclaimed in the national anthem of Romania.
