Aunt Jemima was born Lillian Richard on March 23, 1891, in Hawkins. At the age of 20 Lillian went to Dallas looking for work and a short time later was contracted by Quaker Oats Company asking her to go store to store, dressed as Aunt Jemima to demonstrate Aunt Jemima's pancakes and other products. Her career with Quaker Oats lasted over 37 years. in 1995 The Texas legislature passed a resolution declaring Hawkins "The Pancake Capital of Texas."

In addition to her local celebrity status in East Texas, she was also the grand aunt of another hometown celebrity, Stanley Richard. Stanley Richard is a retired safety in the NFL, having played for the San Diego Chargers and the Washington Red Skins. He is the grandson of George Richard of Hawkins Texas, Lillian's older brother.
