Wilfred is an American comedy television series that premiered on FX on June 23, 2011. Based on the original Australian series, Wilfred, which aired a total of 16 episodes on SBS One, the series stars Elijah Wood as Ryan, along with series co-creator Jason Gann, reprising his titular role of Wilfred.
Each episode of the series typically revolves around Wilfred helping Ryan to some achievement, the object of which serves as the title of the episode. For example, the first three episodes of the series are titled "Happiness", "Trust", and "Fear". Each also opens with a quote concerning the title, after which every word but the title disappears.[1][2]

Ryan (Elijah Wood) attempts suicide by overdosing on pills and drinking a bottle of NyQuil on the night before he begins a new job his sister Kristen (Dorian Brown), a gynecological nurse, got for him. He fails to even fall asleep though, in part due to his neighbor Spencer's (Ethan Suplee) noisy motorcycle. His other neighbor, Jenna (Fiona Gubelmann), drops by the next morning, asking him to watch her dog Wilfred (Jason Gann). Although everyone else sees just a dog, Ryan sees an Australian man in a fursuit who nags the former lawyer all day about his acquiescence to others. Ryan oversleeps after his first encounter with Wilfred, causing Kristen to call and confront him about missing his first day of work. But Ryan ends up hanging out with Wilfred again, who convinces Ryan to confront Spencer after Wilfred causes a confrontation with him. Kristen comes over to confront Ryan about not showing up, and reveals that the pills, which she gave him, were just sugar pills. Ryan steps out to confer with Wilfred, who tricks Ryan into breaking into Spencer's house while Wilfred steals the man's marijuana plants, and defecates in his boots. Upon fleeing home, Kristen puts Ryan on the phone with her boss to beg for his job, but Ryan, inspired by his experience with Wilfred, tells him he would "rather eat possum ass than be [his] desk monkey". Wilfred comes into Ryan's yard. After a conversation about loyalty, Wilfred convinces Ryan to take him to the beach, which displays a "No Dogs Allowed" sign, and challenges him to prove his loyalty by allowing him to roam the beach. After Ryan lets him, the two bond more, and spend the day hanging out. When Ryan drops Wilfred off, Jenna asks Ryan to trick Wilfred into going to the dentist to get his teeth cleaned. Ryan, torn between Wilfred's trust and his attraction to Jenna, reluctantly accepts, and tricks Wilfred by telling him they are going to the movies. While going under anesthesia, Wilfred states that Jenna "has a dick". Ryan tries to figure out if she does when she comes over for dinner later that night, ultimately unnerving Jenna, who leaves early. Wilfred then convinces Ryan to go tell Jenna that he has feelings for her. Ryan goes to Jenna, gives her flowers, and is about to do so, but her boyfriend, Drew (Chris Klein), comes out and introduces himself, crushing Ryan. Wilfred then explains he meant to say Jenna has a "dick for a boyfriend", and suggests the lie was payback for betraying him with the trip to the vet. When Ryan fears his neighbor Spencer has been paying special attention to him lately, Wilfred, amidst talk of confrontation and dominance, confesses that he left Ryan’s wallet at Spencer’s house the night they broke into it. Ryan avoids a conflict when Spencer confronts him with the wallet, causing Spencer to want to hang out with Ryan, much to his dismay. Later, when a prank on Wilfred with a laser pointer causes the dog to attack their Indian neighbor, Ryan tries to bribe the animal control officer taking him to cut him loose, but he turns out to be Spencer's ex-best friend, Jesse. Wilfred is taken to be put down, and Ryan takes Spencer to the pound, leaving him to talk to Jesse. After Ryan gets the two men to mend fences, Jesse gives Wilfred back. Thinking its over, Ryan returns home, only to find Jesse and Spencer in his house making plans for the three of them. Ryan snaps and confesses to everything to Spencer, causing him to assault Ryan. Ryan and Wilfred both volunteer to work at a hospice to impress Jenna. While there Ryan learns that Wilfred has a "gift" where he can sense when the old people are about to die. The first time Ryan exploits Wilfred's gift to get on Lisa's (Rashida Jones) good side, but the second time Wilfred kills an old woman by suffocating her. Jenna tells Ryan that she will do a story based on Wilfred's "gift", but when Wilfred breaks into the drug closet and gets high, things spiral out of control. Wilfred allegedly kills Ruby, a nurse who works there. Ryan confronts Wilfred about this and tells him he never wanted any of this.[clarification needed] Jenna cancels Ryan's segment in favor of doing the story of a nurse who stole drugs and killed herself as a result of "guilt". When Ryan becomes increasingly annoyed with Jenna's boyfriend Drew, Wilfred suggests that he and Ryan sabotage Jenna and Drew's relationship. Ryan refuses to interfere with Jenna's relationship with Drew until Wilfred informs him of Drew's competitiveness in sports. Ryan goads Drew into playing a game of ping-pong, which Drew wins before gloating and breaking some of Ryans personal property, causing Jenna to break up with Drew. Ryan is unable to resist his conscience and decides to mend the relationship between Drew and Jenna. However, Wilfred poisons Ryan. Ryan rushes to the hospital, only to learn that Wilfred had "poisoned" him with chocolate, which is only toxic to dogs. Ryan ignores Wilfred for the rest of the day.
