Long Island School for the Gifted (LISG) is a private school (pre-kindergarten to 9th grade) for gifted children located in South Huntington, New York in Suffolk County. It was founded in 1980 by a group of parents who were dissatisfied with the quality of the education provided for their gifted children. One of those parents, Carol Yilmaz, became the school's director.[1]
As of the 2014-2015 school year, the principal is Roberta Tropper.[2]
A child's IQ must be 130 or over to be admitted. LISG admits students of any race, sex, and ethnicity. The school has a wide variety of classes and students work from one to three years above grade level in all subjects. The school offers regents, SAT prep and all higher-level classes. Class sizes are generally small. The total number of students is just over 300 as of the 2009/2010 school year.[citation needed] There are currently 46 staff members, teachers, and administrators.
The building has three wings, plus a square-like center, with another two rooms on the edge of the building in another wing. There are two stories to the building, although the students only use one. There are four "wings of learning," two cafeterias, an auditorium, and many offices for administrators throughout.
Hip-hop artist Steven Markowitz attended LISG.
Controversy
A longtime teacher at Long Island School for the Gifted, Michael Reiner, pleaded guilty to possession of child pornography in March 2007.[3][4][5] Reiner had been arrested in September and then fired from the school.[6][7] He taught grades 4, 5 and 6 at LISG for 18 years.[8][9]
