MTV Hits is an American music video channel that debuted on May 1, 2002. The format of the network resembles that of the classic MTV before the additional of other programming to that network in the 1990s and their slow decline of music video programming. The network has a schedule dominated by videos, with only promotional advertising for MTV Networks and limited commercials on the network. Like the other digital MTV/VH1 channels, MTV Hits is based on an automated wheel schedule introduced in the first years of MTV2. The loop repeats three times a day, starting at 6am Eastern, and then resetting at 2pm and 10pm.

The network's logo has remained the same since the date of launch, with a minor readjustment in February 2010 of the iconic "M" to remove the Music Television tagline and a small quarter of the logo in line with the official rebranding of all MTV networks.

Programming
When MTV Hits launched in 2002, programming consisted of non-stop music videos. At the same time to promote the new network, MTV had a show of the same name. The network consisted of current hit music videos, along with a few older videos from earier in the year, as well as a few from the late 90's. The network was commercial free, with the exception of a few promos for MTV products. In 2008 the network was no longer commercial free and regular length commercial breaks began to appear after every other video. Currently, artist collections air throughout the day and other playlists (i.e. - live performances) air sporadically.

Hit Lists
In 2005, the network began airing a feature called "My Hitlist Month" which was based on viewer selected playlists, submitted to a newly launched network website. This, as well as artist selected playlists aired occasionally on the network through 2006.

Playlistism
December 18, 2006, the "Hit List" theme returned to MTV Hits. At first "Playlistism" consisted of replays of the viewer hit lists from the past, as well as new playlists of sister networks MTV 2, MTVU as well as artist and themed playlists. Over time the playlists began to become less innovative and New Year's Eve 2009 did not receive a special New Year's Eve playlist like in 2007 and 2008. This has led to the possible end of Playlistism which is listed below.

End Of Playlistism
After months of continuous redundancy and discontinuation of many playlists, the "Playlistism" format has begun to fade out in January 2010. The bumpers and visual scheme remains, however the "bug" logo on the bottom right no longer "morphs" into saying "Playlistism." "MTV Hits Playlist" has been renamed "Music Mix" which consists of the original MTV Hits format though so far without the older music videos. Theme blocks have also emerged such as

Music Mix:Standard blend of music and was the old format of the network before playlistism, the older videos have not yet began to air.

Sucker Free On MTV Hits: Features a mix of hip hop and R&B music videos, old school hip hop videos were shown in the playlistism version of this titled "Sucker Free Playlist" but have been removed.

MTV Hits Top 10 Countdown: A new episode airs every Monday and features the weeks top 10 music videos.

Latest And Greatest: Formerly known as "latest and greatest playlist" this features back to back videos of chosen artists. The videos played are usually the artist's current hit plus an older top hit.

Another feature is weekly Video Premieres, each premiere airs at the top of each hour throughout the day. AMTV, on MTV and AMTV-2, on MTV2 also air video premeres on the hour on a weekly basis.

Availability
MTV Hits, a part of the MTV Digital Suite, is available on most digital cable systems (like Verizon Fios) but not Dish Network or DirecTV. Time Warner Cable does not carry the network on many of their systems. The network is also not seen in New York City on non-Cablevision systems that TimeWarner owns; Time Warner is the majority cable provider for Manhattan, Staten Island, and Brooklyn/Queens. MTV Hits Latin America is carried on some cable systems in Latin America, South America, Mexico, and Romania in a localized form.
