Manfred S. Gorvy (born 1938) is a South African investor and philanthropist based in London. He is the founder and Chairman of Hanover Acceptances.
Early life
Manfred S. Gorvy was born on 4 May 1938 in South Africa.[1] He attended Parktown Boys' High School and later received a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg.[1][2]
Career
He founded Hanover Acceptances, a property, agribusiness and financial investment vehicle, in 1974.[1][2] He has served as its Chairman since its founding.[1][2] It includes four subsidiaries: Dorrington; Refresco Gerber; African Realty Trust; Fresh Capital.[3] In 2014, The Blackstone Group tried to acquire Refresco Gerber,[4][5] but the offer was rejected by Gorvy.[6]
He is a Fellow of the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants.[1]
In 2008, he was the 312th richest person in the United Kingdom, with an estimated wealth of £260 million according to the Sunday Times Rich List.[7] A year later, in 2009, he was the 333rd richest person in the UK, with an estimated wealth of £170 million.[8]
Philanthropy
In 2011, they endowed the refurbishment of a theatre at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.[9] As a result, it was renamed The Lydia and Manfred Gorvy Lecture Theatre.[9] Further donations went to Tate, another museum in London.[10][11] They have also made charitable contributions of £25,000 or more to the Royal National Theatre in London.[12] Additionally, they have made donations to the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Donmar Warehouse.[13][14]
Personal life
He is married to Lydia R. Gorvy, who has served on the Board of Directors of Hanover Acceptances since 1991.[15][16] Their son, Brett Gorvy, serves as the Chair of the Post-War and Contemporary Art Department at Christie’s in New York City.[17] Their son, Dylan Gorvy is an equine surgeon and part owner of an equine hospital in Sweden, Malaren Hastklinik.
