==Life ==
The oldest of three sisters, Shaw began singing in 1952, at the age of 19 (the same age Prince debuted). She went by the name ''Matti'', as a singer leaving off the ''e''.

In 1956, she married [[John L. Nelson]] (1916-2001), a [[jazz]] [[musician]], and had two children with him, Prince (born 1958), and two years later Tyka (born 1960). The couple became estranged late in 1960 and formally separated a few years later.

Shaw remarried in 1966 to Hayward Julius Baker, and had a third child in 1970, Omarr. She lived in [[Chanhassen]], and [[Edina, Minnesota|Edina]], [[Minnesota]], and of Minneapolis, and among bays of [[Lake Minnetonka]]. In 1997, she had a beachhouse in Spain, near Prince and [[Mayte Garcia]]'s home.

On February 15 2002, she died at age 68, in her home in Edina, Minnesota.
