Mendonça is a Portuguese and Galician surname. It sometimes appears as the anglicized forms Mendonca or Mendonsa. The Spanish variant is Mendoza. The name derives from Basque mendi (mountain) and (h)otz (cold), which in turn provides the name for a village in Álava featuring a castle-tower that belonged to a noble family of the Middle Ages.
