Michael John Attenborough (born 13 February 1950) is an English theatre director. His parents are the actors Richard Attenborough and Sheila Sim. Since he is the child of a peer, he is entitled to the courtesy title The Honourable.
Attenborough was educated at Westminster School and the University of Sussex.
Theatre career
He is the artistic director of the Almeida Theatre in London and the joint vice-chairman of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. Previously, he was artistic director of Leeds Playhouse (now West Yorkshire Playhouse) from 1974 to 1979, associate director of the Young Vic from 1979 to 1980, artistic director of the Palace Theatre, Watford, from 1980 to 1984, artistic director of Hampstead Theatre from 1984 to 1989 and principal associate director of the Royal Shakespeare Company from 1990 to 2002. He continues to be an honorary associate artist for the RSC.
Personal life
Attenborough is married to actress Karen Lewis. He was previously married to actress Jane Seymour from 1971 to 1973.
One of his two younger sisters, Jane Holland, was killed in the Indian Ocean tsunami on 26 December 2004 along with her mother-in-law and Attenborough's 15-year-old niece, Lucy. His other sister is an actress with three children.
