The Michigan Urban Farming Initiative (MUFI /mʌfiː/) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Detroit, Michigan, United States.[1][2] MUFI is most widely known for its multipurpose site in the North End district of central Detroit. It also has a presence in Livonia, a western Metro Detroit suburb.[3]
History
The Michigan Urban Farming Initiative was founded in 2011 by University of Michigan students Tyson Gersh and Darin McLeskey who met at a Detroit Partnership meeting.[4]
The first project for MUFI was the establishment of their main site in the North End district of central Detroit. Since its founding, most of MUFI's efforts have gone to the development of this site.[5]
In 2012, MUFI officially registered as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.[6]
Currently, the North End site functions primarily as an urban farm and community area for activities, such as free yoga classes.[7] Future plans for the site include a community resource center and a memorial garden to local missing girl Bianca Jones.[8] Other projects of MUFI include a garden at Luigi's Pizza Café in Livonia and student groups at universities in Metro Detroit.
MUFI board members include Gersh, McLeskey, and Delores Bennett, who is a former Detroit city commissioner and the only living individual to have a Detroit public park named after her. The Delores Bennett Playground is two blocks away from MUFI's North End site.
