Israeli troops preparing for the battle in Mitla Pass, 1956

The Mitla Pass (Hebrew: מיתלה, Arabic: ممر متلة) is a 32 km-long snaky pass in the Sinai wedged between mountain ranges to the north and south. It is about 50 km east of Suez. It is famous as the site of major battles between Israel and Egypt in 1956, 1967 and 1973.

Mitla incident during War of 1956

In the 1956 war the pass was captured without permission by the 202nd brigade commanded by Ariel Sharon at the cost of 38 Israeli casualties. Sharon was criticised for this, see Ariel Sharon: Mitla incident.
