Mythos Brewery is the second largest Greek brewery, best known for its Mythos brand. The company, a subsidiary of Carlsberg since 2008, also imports a number of non-Greek beers into the country.

History

The company is descended from Henninger Hellas S.A., the local Greek distributor of the German Henninger beer, founded in 1970. In 1992, the Boutari Group purchased the company, and in 1994 it was renamed the Northern Greece Brewery Ltd., as part of a strategy to turn it into a genuine domestic Greek beer company. This was accomplished by the introduction of Mythos beer in 1997, and in 2001 the company renamed itself to the Mythos Brewery Ltd., as Mythos had become its primary product. In 2004 Scottish & Newcastle became majority shareholders.

Mythos Beer

Mythos (Μύθος) is a light straw-colored, pilsner style lager introduced in 1997. It is available in both 330 ml and 500 ml bottles or cans. The alcohol content is 5%. It was awarded at the "2001 INTERBEER INTERNATIONAL BEER & WHISKEY COMPETITION".

Availability

Mythos is bottled and has widespread Greek distribution. It is exported to a number of European countries as well as the U.S.A., Canada, and Australia.

In addition to Mythos beer, Mythos Brewery also produces and distributes, in Greece, the German brands Henninger lager and Kaiser pilsener and the local brand Golden, available at selected outlets in the local market. It also imports and distributes Carlsberg Beer (Denmark), Foster's Lager (Australia), and Guinness stout and Kilkenny (Ireland).

The name Mythos means 'legend' in Greek.

Former Latvian Football star Karls Ackasovs was drinking Mythos when he drank 53 cans of lager on a Sydney to London flight, beating the legendary drinking record of Australian cricketer David Boon.
